How to apply concrete sealer with a sprayer, without wrecking either

Spraying is the fastest way to an even coat of concrete sealer, but only if the sprayer is built for it. Most penetrating and acrylic sealers are solvent-carried, and solvents perish standard seals in a couple of jobs. Here is the setup and technique the trades use.

The right unit

• Seals: VITON. Solvent-based sealers destroy nitrile and EPDM seals. Water-based sealers are gentler, but VITON is still the safe default across both.
• Tank: stainless steel for regular sealing work. The Gloria 505TK (5.0L) and 510TK (10.0L) concrete sealer variants run VITON seals, brass fittings and 85 PSI of working pressure for a consistent fan.
• Capacity: match the tank to the slab. A 10.0L tank covers most residential slabs without a refill, which matters because refill stops are where you lose the wet edge. For big commercial floors, a 12.0L air-driven sealer unit runs continuously.
• Nozzle: a fan jet rated for solvents. Keep a spare; a worn nozzle streaks.

Prep decides the finish

Sealer shows every prep shortcut. New concrete needs its cure time first. Old concrete needs cleaning, and etched surfaces take penetrating sealer better. Acid etching is acid work: use an acid-resistant sprayer with VITON seals for the etch solution, rinse thoroughly, and let the slab dry to the sealer manufacturer's spec before coating.

Technique: keep a wet edge

• Work in strips, overlapping each pass onto the previous one by about half a fan width while it is still wet.
• Keep the pressure steady and the wand at a consistent height. On pump-up units, repressurise before the fan narrows, not after.
• Two thin coats beat one heavy coat. Heavy coats puddle, blush and stay tacky.
• Plan your exit. Start at the far corner and spray toward the door. Every concreter learns this once.

Cleanup is where sprayers die

Sealer left in the tank cures in the pump, the hose and the nozzle. Empty the unit, flush with the solvent the sealer manufacturer specifies, then spray the flush solvent through the wand until it runs clear. When a unit does gum up or start weeping, a genuine VITON seal kit usually brings it back.

Yes, after a proper flush. Never mix residues of solvent and water-based products in the tank.

Roller or sprayer for sealer?

Spraying is faster and more even on open slabs and textured finishes. Rollers still suit small patches and edges. Many crews spray then back-roll.
