Caustic and alkaline removers want EPDM

Caustic removers are sodium or potassium hydroxide based, and they are the usual choice on porous masonry, concrete, brick and render, because they break the paint down in the pores rather than just softening it on the face. Strong alkalis attack VITON, so this side of the job needs EPDM right through the unit, including the trigger and the nozzle O-ring.

Two units cover most of this work. The ALKA5 5.0L Industrial Grade Poly Sprayer, Alkaline Resistant from Gloria holds 5.0L in a 7.0L tank on EPDM seals, with a polypropylene pump, an HDPE tank, an INOX spring and a PVDF 80025 flat fan nozzle that sheets a remover onto a wall evenly. Solvent gels and citrus removers want VITON

Solvent-based gel removers and d-limonene citrus products are the usual choice on smooth and non-porous surfaces, where a caustic would eat into the finish. Powder-coated and prepainted steel, signage, glass, sealed render. Most of these products are petroleum or terpene based, which points to VITON (FKM), but confirm the specific remover against its SDS. Test a small area first as well, because a strong solvent can lift the coating under the paint you are trying to remove.

The PRO5 5.0L and PRO8 8.0L industrial poly sprayers from Gloria run VITON seals at 44 PSI, with a brass lance and an adjustable brass cone nozzle. The PRO8 carries 8.0L in a 12.0L tank for long wall runs without a refill. For close work, the 1.0L and 1.5L Solvent Resistant minis from Klager cover spot jobs, and the 1.0L Superior steps up to higher-grade FKM-80 seals for the more aggressive petroleum solvents. Where the work is heavy or daily, the 505TK 5.0L and 510TK 10.0L stainless units run to 6 bar (85 PSI) with a pressure gauge, brass lance, trigger and nozzle, and both hand-pump and compressed-air pressurising.

Worth reading twice: Gloria's own specification for the PRO series states the sprayers are not suitable for acid, alkaline or acetone-based substances. That is not a caveat to skim past. It is exactly why the caustic side needs its own unit. See solvent-resistant sprayers for the wider range.

Why most graffiti crews end up with two sprayers

A contractor on a council route does not get to pick the surface. Brick fence at one stop, powder-coated substation at the next. Both chemistries travel in the ute, and no single seal covers both properly, so two sprayers is the honest answer rather than an upsell.

Label them and keep them apart. Decanting a caustic into yesterday's solvent tank is how a good unit gets written off. If the two chemistries share a hose or a spare lance, that shared part is the one that fails first. The same discipline applies across the rest of a commercial cleaning kit.

One case catches people out. Some heavy paint strippers are acetone or MEK based, and ketones are the exception to the solvent rule: they need EPDM, not VITON. If your remover is a ketone-bearing stripper it belongs on the EPDM unit. Confirm concentration and temperature against the SDS, or check the Chemical Compatibility Guide.

Capacity, tank and keeping it serviceable

Match the size to the route, not to the biggest job you can picture.

• 1.0L to 1.5L mini. Spot tags, bollards, signage, lift interiors. Also the sensible size for whichever chemistry you reach for less often.
• 5.0L poly. The everyday unit. Enough for route work without stopping to refill, and light enough to carry up a stair.
• 8.0L poly. Large wall areas, where refilling costs you more time than carrying the extra weight.
• 5.0L and 10.0L stainless. Daily, heavy or hot work. Higher working pressure, a gauge you can read, and brass wetted parts.

Triggers and seals are the parts that wear out first on graffiti work. Replace the part rather than the sprayer.
