Pressure Spray Bottles: How to Choose the Right One for Your Chemical

A pressure spray bottle is a small refillable sprayer, usually 1 to 1.5 litres, that you pump up by hand so it gives a steady spray without squeezing a trigger every second. For trade work, the right one is the one whose seals suit your chemical. Get that right and a good pressure spray bottle lasts for years. Get it wrong and it leaks within weeks.

Pump spray bottle, pressure sprayer or trigger bottle?

The same tool goes by plenty of names: pump spray bottle, pressure spray bottle, pressurised spray bottle, hand pump sprayer. They all mean a bottle with a pump built into the head. You charge it with a few dozen strokes, and the stored air pushes the liquid out when you press the valve.

A trigger bottle works differently. Every squeeze is one pump, which is fine for a quick wipe but tiring over a full job, and the spray weakens as your hand tires. A pressure spray bottle gives an even spray for as long as the pressure holds, which matters when you are coating a surface rather than dampening a cloth.

Step one: match the seals to the chemical

This is the decision that matters most. The bottle itself is usually polyethylene and copes with most chemicals. The O-rings and gaskets in the pump are what fail. Choose the seal for your chemical family.

Your chemical Seal Klager pressure spray bottle
Acids: descalers, aluminium brightener, brick and concrete acid wash VITON (FKM) 1.2L or 1.5L Acid Resistant
Petroleum solvents: brake cleaner, solvent degreasers, tyre shine VITON (FKM) 1.0L or 1.5L Solvent Resistant
Heavy petroleum solvent work FKM-80, a higher grade of VITON 1.0L Superior
Acetone, or solvents mixed with acetone A seal build rated for acetone mixtures 1.2L Master Solve+
Alkalis and caustics: strong degreasers, fibreglass cleaners, graffiti removal EPDM 1.2L Alkaline Resistant
Food oils, fats and release sprays Food grade, certified for direct food contact 1.2L CHEF

For bleach, Klager makes a dedicated bleach resistant model, built and rated for sodium hypochlorite as a whole unit. Not sure where your chemical sits? The Chemical Compatibility Guide covers the common ones, and our VITON vs EPDM article explains why the two seals are close to opposites.

Step two: pick the size

For a handheld bottle the choice is mostly 1.0, 1.2 or 1.5 litres. Fill only to the max mark on the bottle, which leaves the air space it needs to hold pressure. Klager's 1.0L solvent unit takes 900 mL and the 1.5L takes up to 1.5 litres.

  • 1.0 litre for detail work, tight spaces and carrying in a tool kit.
  • 1.2 to 1.5 litres for a full day of workshop or cleaning jobs with fewer refills.
  • Bigger jobs move up to a 3 to 8 litre poly pressure sprayer or a stainless steel sprayer.

Step three: check the build

  • Pressure relief valve. A must. It vents excess pressure so the bottle cannot be over pumped. Klager bottles are limited to 3 or 4 bar depending on the model.
  • Stainless spring. Klager pumps use an INOX spring that does not rust out in wet or corrosive work.
  • Nozzles and lances. Assorted nozzles change the spray pattern, and 15, 30 and 50 cm PVC extension lances add reach.
  • Spare parts. Klager makes every component available as a genuine spare, so a worn seal is a repair, not a new bottle.

How to use a pressure spray bottle

  1. Fill to the scale mark, leaving an air space above the liquid.
  2. Screw the head down firmly and pump around 30 strokes.
  3. Press the valve to spray, and pump again as the pressure falls.
  4. When you finish, release the pressure, decant leftover chemical back into its container and rinse the bottle with clean water.

Do not fill with liquid hotter than 30 degrees C. The full routine, including care of the pump O-ring, is in our Refill and Repair Guide.

Why trades choose a professional bottle

A retail garden spray bottle is built for water and mild garden products. Put a workshop solvent or a strong acid through it and the seals give up quickly. A professional bottle costs more up front, but with seals matched to the chemical, a relief valve and spare parts on hand it keeps working, which beats buying a new bottle every few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best pressure spray bottle for chemicals?

One with seals matched to your chemical, a pressure relief valve and spare parts available. Klager pressure spray bottles come in acid, solvent, alkaline, bleach and food grade versions for exactly that reason.

How do you use a pressure spray bottle?

Fill to the scale mark, leave an air space, screw the head down and pump around 30 strokes. Spray, pump again as needed, then release the pressure and rinse after use.

How much pressure does a pump spray bottle hold?

It depends on the model. Klager bottles have a relief valve that limits them to 3 or 4 bar, and Klager rates the 1.0L solvent unit to 3 bar (44 psi) and the 1.5L to 4 bar (58 psi).

Can you put solvents in a pump spray bottle?

Only in one with solvent rated seals. Petroleum solvents need VITON, and acetone needs a unit built for it, such as the Klager Master Solve+.

Can a pressure spray bottle be repaired?

Yes, if spare parts exist. Klager makes every component available, and NORA PRO stocks genuine VITON, EPDM and FKM-80 seal kits in Australia.
