Choosing a Tyre Shine Applicator for Detailing and Truck Wash
Share
The most practical tyre shine applicator for a detailing or truck wash business is a refillable pressure sprayer filled from bulk, with VITON (FKM) seals for solvent based tyre shine and a fan nozzle for an even coat. A 1.0 or 1.5 litre bottle suits a detail bay. A 5 or 10 litre stainless sprayer with a spray gun and spiral hose suits truck wash and fleet volumes. Water based tyre shines are a different product, so check the label or send us the SDS before you fill.
Why bulk tyre shine goes through a pressure sprayer
Tyre shine, or tyre dressing, goes on nearly every vehicle that leaves the bay, so the way you apply it adds up. Aerosol cans are used once and binned, and you pay for propellant along with the dressing. A retail trigger bottle is no better: a standard trigger can swell or leak once it meets a stronger chemical, and squeezing one all day is tiring work.
A refillable pressure sprayer solves both. Buy tyre shine in bulk, decant it, pump the sprayer up and lay down a steady pattern. The pump, seals and nozzle are serviceable, so one unit outlasts a lot of cans. Our pressure spray bottle guide covers the basics. Everything here sits in our automotive and detailing range.
Solvent based or water based: the seal follows the carrier
Solvent based tyre shines are carried in a petroleum solvent. Water based ones are carried in water. The seals in the sprayer have to suit the carrier, so read the label and section 3 of the SDS first.
- Solvent based tyre shine: VITON (FKM) seals. The Klager solvent resistant bottles and the Gloria 505TK and 510TK Car and Truck Wash sprayers are VITON sealed and listed for tyre shine.
- Water based tyre shine: a different product. Send us the SDS and we will confirm the seal and sprayer.
- Blends with acetone or another ketone: the VITON units are not for acetone. Ask us.
- Thick gels and creams: the Klager solvent sprayers are not for thick and sticky liquids, so ask us first.
The Chemical Compatibility Guide lists solvent based tyre shine against VITON, and our solvent resistant sprayer guide explains why petroleum solvents and ketones need different seals.
Detail bay or truck wash: pick the size
All five units below are for solvent based tyre shine.
| Job | Sprayer | Holds | Seal | Max pressure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Detail work and a tool kit | Klager 1.0L Solvent Resistant | 900 mL | VITON (FKM) | 3 bar (44 psi) |
| Busy detail bay | Klager 1.5L Solvent Resistant | Up to 1.5 L | VITON (FKM) | 4 bar (58 psi) |
| Heavy daily use | Klager 1.0L Superior | 900 mL | FKM-80, a higher grade of VITON | 3 bar (44 psi) |
| Car and truck wash | Gloria 505TK Car and Truck Wash | 5.0 L | VITON (FKM) | 6 bar (85 psi) |
| Fleet yards | Gloria 510TK Car and Truck Wash | 10.0 L | VITON (FKM) | 6 bar (85 psi) |
The Klager bottles are pumped by hand and have a built in relief valve, so they cannot be over pumped. A 15, 30 or 50 cm Klager extension lance, also VITON sealed, adds reach where the bottle will not fit, though it ends in a full cone nozzle rather than a fan.
The Gloria 505TK and 510TK Car and Truck Wash each have a CT Italy RL16 spray gun, a 4001 stainless steel flat fan nozzle and a spiral hose that stretches to 4.0 m. Pump by hand, or connect the workshop air line to the compressor connection and watch the gauge so it never passes 6 bar. A trolley for the 510TK lets you wheel it along a line of trucks. See all stainless steel sprayers.
Fit a fan nozzle for an even coat
A flat fan nozzle lays an even band rather than a round cone, which is the pattern you want along a sidewall. Both Gloria Car and Truck Wash units come with one. For Klager bottles, the Klager assorted nozzle pack covers cone, fan and jet patterns, and since threads vary between models, tell us which bottle you have. Replace any nozzle once its pattern distorts or its output rises.
Keep tyre shine off brake discs and paint
Overspray is the usual complaint with sprayed tyre shine. Dressing on a brake disc is a safety problem, and on paint or a polished wheel it leaves marks the customer will notice.
- Aim at the sidewall from close in, with the fan lined up along the tyre rather than pointed at the wheel.
- Hold a shield between tyre and wheel, or spray onto an applicator pad and wipe the dressing on.
- Wipe any overspray off the disc, wheel or paint straight away.
Solvent carriers are often flammable, so spray away from sparks, flames and hot parts, with good ventilation, and follow the chemical maker's label and SDS for PPE.
Servicing and seal kits
Seals wear in every sprayer, and the fix is a seal kit, not a new unit.
- Klager 1.0L and 1.5L Solvent Resistant: the genuine Klager VITON seal kit.
- Klager 1.0L Superior: its own FKM-80 seal kit.
- Gloria 505TK and 510TK: VITON seal kits for the brass pump, a piston plate repair kit, and the RL16 gun, relief valve and air connector as spares.
Release the pressure before you open any unit. Decant leftover tyre shine from a Klager bottle back into its drum. Rinse a Gloria tank with clean water and spray some through the gun so the hose and nozzle come clean. Store sprayers depressurised and out of direct sun, and keep the pump piston seal greased with silicone oil. Keep one labelled sprayer per tyre shine, because residue from one product can attack seals meant for another. See the Refill and Repair Guide and our parts and seal repair kits.
Selling tyre shine in bulk? Sell the applicator with it
Chemical companies that sell tyre shine by the drum can supply the applicator too, so customers end up on a sprayer that suits the product. A VITON sealed Klager bottle suits solvent based dressings, and NORA PRO is the exclusive Australia and New Zealand distributor of Klager.
For ready to use tyre shine spray bottles, the Canyon 3SE Super Black is a chemical resistant trigger for harsher detailing chemicals, in 28/400 and 28/410 neck sizes, sold by the box of 350. Resistance still varies by product, so send us the SDS first. Browse trigger sprayers and workshop spray bottles, or ask about private labelling.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best applicator for tyre shine?
For trade use, a refillable pressure sprayer with seals that suit the tyre shine and a fan nozzle for an even coat. For solvent based tyre shine that means VITON (FKM) seals, such as a Klager 1.0L or 1.5L Solvent Resistant bottle for detail work or a Gloria 505TK or 510TK for truck wash volumes.
Can you put tyre shine in a pressure sprayer?
Yes, if the seals suit the carrier. Solvent based tyre shine needs VITON (FKM) seals. Water based tyre shine is a different product, so check the label and send us the SDS so we can confirm the sprayer.
Can I use one sprayer for water based and solvent based tyre shine?
It is better not to. Keep one labelled sprayer per product, because residue from one can attack seals meant for another, and send us the SDS for the water based product.
How do I stop tyre shine getting on brake discs?
Aim the fan at the sidewall from close in, and use a shield between tyre and wheel or apply the dressing with a pad. Wipe any overspray off the disc, wheel or paint straight away.
Can a tyre shine sprayer run off the workshop air line?
The Gloria 505TK and 510TK can. Connect the air line to the compressor connection, watch the gauge and never go past 6 bar (85 psi). The Klager bottles are pumped by hand.
Detailers, wash operators, fleet yards and chemical companies can request a quote for tyre shine sprayers in volume, or apply for a trade account. For the rest of the wash bay, see car, truck and fleet wash. Gloria, CT Italy and Canyon products are supplied by NORA PRO.
